Adopt a pet.   Adoption is helping shelters find good homes for pets.  Dogs or cats for a small fee can find the right pet for your family.  It is always a good idea to prepare for this new family member by either viewing training videos or books either one will help you in your decision.  Get your children involved by having them earn a new pet.

Letting them know that pets will require help in their care.   To see if your kids are up to adopting a new pet.  Give them a schedule of duties to see if they can be responsible for the care of your new family member.

Put up a bulletin board with chores.  Example making their beds and picking up their rooms.  If they do this simple chore daily for a set amount of time like forever.   Just joking.  Maybe bring home a foster pet which means taking care of a pet until a home is found.  Show them by setting up their meals at certain times for cleaning a litter box.  They will need to be supervised until they can do it on their own.

Buy some kids books the subject of taking care of a pet.  It will also help them improve their reading skills.  Get videos were kids are doing the demonstrations.   They will be able to relate.

Plan a visit to one of your local shelters.  Let them see first hand the animals that need adoption.  Have one of the shelter personnel give them some one on one advise and other information on the processing procedures.  This will let them know how important it is for these pets to be given a loving home.  Also about the responsibility it will take for these pets proper care.

Parents should help show the proper way to walk a dog.   Showing them either by a video or reading an instructional book on the subject.   Go with them until your children know the right way to handle the dog will taking it for a walk.

Training a dog through a dog trainer handle is another way of preparing for a well trained dog.   You need to know how to handle any pet either a dog or cat to avoid having problems later.  This can make having a pet more enjoyable by being the leader of the pack.

Check out some of these links for recommended pet books.   Hope that I have been of some help. There are many popular pet show that provide free training of either a dog or cat.  Watch them together as a family.  Than after have a group discuss.

This will help in training for your new family member.  It will also make sure there is no confusion on instructing your pet.  Everyone is on the same page.  This will provide your pet with healthy manners around the house as well when going for their daily walks.
